A member arrives with lower back pain. Should they see a physiotherapist or book sessions with a personal trainer? The answer seems obvious — physiotherapy first — yet many people default to the gym, hoping that exercise will resolve the issue. Sometimes it does. Often, it makes things worse.

What Personal Trainers Do

Personal trainers are qualified to design and supervise exercise programs for generally healthy individuals. They specialise in progressive overload, movement coaching, body composition, and sport-specific conditioning. An excellent personal trainer understands anatomy, can identify basic movement dysfunctions, and knows when to refer — but they are not clinicians.

What Physiotherapists Do

Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals trained to assess, diagnose, and treat musculoskeletal conditions. They can identify the root cause of pain (which is often not where the pain presents), design targeted rehabilitation protocols, and safely bridge the gap between injury and return to full training. In Kerala, physiotherapists hold a degree qualification (BPT or MPT) and are regulated by the Rehabilitation Council of India.

The Critical Distinction

The key question is: are you healthy and looking to improve, or are you managing a symptom? If you have pain, movement restriction, recent injury, post-surgical recovery needs, or a chronic condition affecting your movement — see a physiotherapist first. Once cleared and rehabilitated to an appropriate baseline, a personal trainer can take over progressive conditioning.

Why Having Both Under One Roof Matters

At Luxfit, our physiotherapist and personal trainers work in the same facility and communicate directly. When a member transitions from rehabilitation to performance training, there is no information gap, no contradictory advice, and no starting from scratch. The handover is seamless — and that continuity is one of the most clinically meaningful things we offer.
